BS Poorhouse Talk 310119 Poster

The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society wishes all members, friends and neighbours a very prosperous and peaceful 2019.

2018 was a good year for our society. We published our first book, held a number of well-attended open evenings, made progress on some of our projects and published many interesting articles on our website. There is certainly no lack of interest in local history.

Talking about projects, September 2019 will see the 80-year anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. We are thinking of organising an event around that time. All contributions and suggestions are welcome!

We are also planning an oral history event to record memories of Sawbridgeworth residents during the war. For this to work we would need the active participation from as many people who lived in the area at that time.

Our next open evening will be held on Thursday 31 January when Bill Hardy will talk about the Bishops’ Stortford Workhouse. Bill has promised to pay special attention to residents there from Sawbridgeworth and High Wych. Click on the link above for a poster announcing the event. Come and join us and perhaps use the opportunity to join our society.

Meanwhile, our book, High Wych, Sawbridgeworth and the Great Waris still available from the Tudor House, High Wych Stores and directly from our website at https://sbwhistory.com/the-great-war/  The price, however, has now gone up to £12.50.
