Walter Lawrence

Our recent post about Walter Lawrence on our Facebook page has prompted several responses and new Likes for the page. So many family memories have been shared that it will take a while for them to be collated into an article and we apologise for that. We would like to encourage as many people as possible to share more memories and perhaps photographs for this project. Theo van de Bilt can be contacted on theo@vandebilt.co.uk and he will be pleased to receive this information.

The original Walter Lawrence, the founder of the company, was born in Ware in 1832, the son of a publican. His son, Sir Walter, was a cricket fanatic and donated a trophy which bears his name and it is still given today. This is for the cricketer who scores the fastest century in English domestic country cricket in terms of balls received.

Guy Lawrence was the last director to bear that name. Any information about him would be welcome.

We look forward to hearing from former employees and their families who may have memories.
